"Daylight Robbery" FundraiserUnder the direction of Playmakers! alumna Kiersten Hanly (University of Ottawa, B.F.A. - Theatre, B.A. - French) a group of intrepid Young Actors' Guild members and volunteers braved the punishing July heat in full costume. Their plan was to raise funds for our new lighting system by offering "A SONG, a SPEECH, a SONNET or a SWORDFIGHT" to before- and after-theatre crowds in Stratford's parks in return for donations to Playmakers! Theatre School (a registered Canadian charity). All the material chosen by the young performers was well-received by their impromptu audiences; however, the songs from "As You Like It" (settings by Terry McKenna) and the swordfight from "Jean de Bort" (Y.A.G., December 2009) seemed particularly popular. This fundraiser provided a rare opportunity for our actors to perfect repertoire by performing it over and over again, on demand, for an ever-changing audience. These young ambassadors of classical theatre made many new friends for Playmakers! and received many, many compliments (and generous donations) from the public, as well as from theatre professionals and educators at both secondary and post-secondary levels. |
